Fun For All Ages
The Annual Family Fishing Derby is
held annually at the Rotary Pond in conjunction with the Provincial Family
Fishing Weekend in June. The derby is cosponsored by Ducks
Unlimited and is an entertaining and educational day for the children and adults
alike. The children learn about wetland game birds, by watching two short
videos presented by members of Ducks Unlimited, and a question and answer period
that follows.The
children and adults then build bird houses, the bird houses are provided by
Ducks Unlimited. The children are offered the chance to take home their finished
project for a small donation to DU, any houses not taken home by the children
are placed on various lakes.The children then enjoy a day of
fishing for the feisty little rainbow trout the pond is stocked with. The
fishermen are treated to lunch, ice-cream and drinks, and given a membership to
Greenwings and a number of other giveaways. Thanks to the sponsorship of Ducks
Unlimited and other local sponsors and the dedication of Dennis Whitbread and
his team, the derby offers approximately $500.00 in prizes to be won by the "children"...every
child is a winner.Children
bring your parents, grandparents, or other adult and help them to remember what
it was like to be a child and have a good time fishing.
